Add Twitter Followers – Stop Turning Them Away

Stop Turning Away Your Twitter Followers – Use Some Twitter Sense

Stop Turning Away Your Twitter Followers – Use Some Twitter Sense

Twitter is a great micro blogging site and since it’s creation in March 2006 it has grown to having over 6 million users and an estimated 55 million monthly users. Using the tagline, “what are you doing?” it encourages people from all walks of life to answer that question in 140 characters or less. Many business owners never seem to be able to find the time to blog regularly, Twitter takes away that excuse and allows you to easily connect with your followers, taking up only a few moments of your valuable time.

During 2009 Twitter seems to have exploded it’s number of users. This is due mainly to celebrity endorsement and Twitter reaching the mainstream market. Most business owners use Twitter as a marketing tool, however many are still unsure about how to use it for maximum effect. Unfortunately more and more spammers are also using Twitter as a marketing tool, however it’s very easy to stop and block any of these types of tweets appearing in your feed. Unlike your email account, you have total control over which tweets you receive. If someone that you are following sends you either offensive tweets or purely promotional tweets then in one click you unfollow them, and in some cases you may want to block them too, and never have to hear from them again. Unlike email where spam is persistent! Please make sure that the tweets that you are sending out do not come across as spam. Too many sales type tweets may be off putting for your followers and you may find people unfollowing you, no matter how unintentional your actions have been. Although the premise is “what are you doing?”, Twitter is all about building relationships and taking an interest in your followers too. Ask questions, reply to tweets and show an interest, the more you take an interest in others, the more they will pay attention to you. There is a numbers game on Twitter, with many people wanting as many followers as possible. However large numbers do not always equal large responses. It is better to build a following of responsive tweeters that you interact with on a regular basis and take an interest in them that go all out to win the numbers game, which if you are not using Twitter to build relationships, is a game you are certainly going to lose. When using Twitter to grow your business there are other things you should consider other than acquiring new customers. By offering your followers informative and useful tweets you are more likely to get referrals or perhaps someone with a complimentary business will offer you a chance to set up a joint venture with them. There is a Twitter URL shortening service called Bit.ly where you can shorten a URL and link it to your Twitter account. What this does is enable you to see how often your followers actually click through to the links that you tweet about. It can enlighten you about how responsive your followers are and perhaps if your links are not being clicked on, encourage you to rethink your Twitter strategy.

Nearly every social networking site has a Twitter group where you can add your Twitter address for others to follow you. You may be thinking that this is a great idea and again the numbers game starts to tempt you. However it is nearly always a bad idea to add just anyone to your Twitter followers. If their objective is the numbers game then they are less likely to read your tweets and be interested in you. When you look at their Twitter profile and all they seem to have is self promotion, then it is better not to follow them.

It is better to prequalify your potential Twitter followers by ensuring that they reply to others tweets and have tweeted recently. Also check to see if they provide useful information or are their tweets full of what they’ve had for breakfast and other useless information.

As like any social networking platform, the old saying of, you only get out of it what you put in, is very true. Start the way you mean to go and use it as a tool to build relationships and get to know your followers and those you follow, instead of being treated like a spammer and see your followers clicking the unfollow button.

The purpose it serves etc.
