The Basics Of Twitter
The Complete Basics To Twitter:
Twitter, Tweets, Retweets??? ?! Aaaah what on earth are you talking about!
I know how you feel and we all kind of started there once which is why I wanted to create a small beginners guide to twitter, firstly what is twitter?
According to twitter themselves (in their Faq section)- “Twitter is for staying in touch and keeping up with friends no matter where you are or what you’re doing.”
Wikipedia says, “Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send updates via SMS, instant messaging, email, to the Twitter website, or any one of the multitude of Twitter applications now available”.
So in a nutshell the most common thing that people ask each other is the question – “What are you doing?”
So twitter lets you give your answer to all your friends all the time but they ask you to keep it short and simple so you can only use 140 characters to do this!
Using Twitter you can send and receive updates (also called tweets) via your browser, email, instant messaging clients and SMS (using your cell phone). No matter where you are, you can tweet!
Essentially when you first join Twitter and especially when you are not sure what you are doing, it can feel like a lonely place.
This is because you aren’t following anyone and no one is following you so you may find yourself asking “what is the point?” Many people start out using twitter saying they don’t get it. It took me a little bit of time to get it myself!
What will happen over time is you will have a bunch of followers and you will be following a bunch of people. Whenever you log in, you will find a home page of what a bunch of your friends have done today. It is similar in a way to the facebook homepage.
The one major difference is twitter is easier to use from a mobile platform (phones etc), and also you can use twitter to find people with similar interests or who are in your area and connect with them, something you cannot do on facebook!
Twitter as a business tool?
Within the first half of 2009, Twitter has gone from nearly 5 million users to over 23 million. It is the social media platform of choice at Fortune 100 companies.
Basically Twitter can be a great tool to build your business.
Here are just a few of the benefits of Twitter:
* Find many targeted followers for your business
* Find out what is going on in your industry by other players
* It creates awareness of you and your product.
* It shows people you have something to say.
* It allows interaction
* It shows them that you are human.
* You can gain feedback on services
* It allows you to mention new offers, sales and breaking news immediately.
* It allows you to form a more casual relationship.
* You can use Twitter to promote your social bookmarking submissions.
* Share links, pictures, videos and articles.
A major rule (that is in your best interest to follow): if you use Twitter as a pure sales tool, you will lose followers quickly. As with all forms of social media, it is about creating a conversation and sharing news – it’s not all about you shoving your sales message down their throats.
Tweets are limited to 140 characters. This is to allow them to be easily sent over mobile SMS systems.
You aren’t able to embed HTML with the exception of hyperlinks.
